As the debut recording of an ensemble rooted in deep and abiding friendships The Daily Biological is a creatively roiling conversation. The unusual trio of drums (Chad Taylor), saxophone (Brian Settles) and piano (Neil Podgurski) creates tough and engaging music that unfurls in kinetic conversational bursts.
Taylor is probably best known as co-founder of the Chicago Underground Duo with trumpeter Rob Mazurek (and the numerous Underground iterations. A professional on the Chicago scene from the age of 16, he's worked with many of the most celebrated artists in improvised music including Fred Anderson, Pharoah Sanders, Nicole Mitchell, Matana Roberts, Ken Vandermark, Darius Jones, James Brandon Lewis, Jaimie Branch, Derek Bailey, Marc Ribot, and Peter Brötzmann, and has also led numerous acclaimed ensembles of his own.
The absence of a bass means all three players sometimes step into the low-end role. A musical problem to be solved 'we all approached it differently,' Taylor says. 'All of our tunes explore different ways to utilize a trio without a bass. You need to be really strong in your playing.'
Part of the reason the music feels so lived in is that Taylor traces his friendships with Settles and Podgurski back to their mid-1990s undergrad years in the New School in New York City.

Né en 1973, le batteur Chad Taylor a croisé les meilleurs saxophonistes américains : Dave Liebman, Pharoah Sanders, Roscoe Mitchell, Ellery Eskelin, Tony Malaby ou Joe Mc Phee. Il a aussi croisé de grands noms de la nouvelle scène. Il a enregistré « Triptych » avec le pianiste Cooper-Moore ou « Digital Primitives » avec le saxophoniste Assif Tsahar. Dernièrement, nous avons chroniqué « Live in Willisau », un fabuleux duo avec le saxophoniste James Brandon Lewis (voir chronique JazzAround). Au ténor, on retrouve Brian Settles qui a étudié à la New School for Jazz avec Reggie Workman. Il a enregistré « Folk » en trio, « Secret Handshake » et « Revolutions » en sextet avec le pianiste Neil Podgurski. A côté de ces albums, Podgurski a aussi croisé Tim Warfield pour « Jazzy Christmas ». On a affaire ici à un vrai trio au sein duquel chacun est soliste à part entière mais aussi compositeur. Settles a composé « The Shepherd » et « Swamp ». Podgurski a écrit « Prism », « Resistance », « Birds, Leaves, Wind, Trees » et « Untethered ». Enfin, Chad Taylor a composé « Matape », « Recife » et « Between Sound and Silence ». Voici donc un trio sans contrebasse… C’est la batterie, très présente et évolutive, qui assure à elle seule l’assise rythmique foisonnante (écoutez notamment « Between Sound and Silence »). L’album fait alterner des moments de défoulement (« Swamp ») et des moments paisibles (« Resistance »). Le trio propose une musique qui, tantôt se développe en boucles répétitives, tantôt lorgne vers des rythmes sud-américains (« Recife », « Prism » avec une belle intro de piano), tantôt en mid tempo (Matape »), tantôt avec un rythme fougueux (« Birds, Leaves, Wind, Trees » avec un bel unisson entre ténor et piano).
