Description
With this ambitious project partly recorded in Beirut with local musicians and featuring Mondkopf, Charbel Haber, Sharif Sehnaoui, G.W. Sok, Tamer Abu Ghazaleh, Oiseaux-Tempête have achieved a far more complex work, richer in texture, the intertwining of acoustic elements with electronica, roaming and shaking the foundations of this almost labyrinthian personal opus of an album. As ever, the group realising both the immersive and also the total physicality on the record.
In Oiseaux-Tempête, Frédéric D. Oberland and Stéphane Pigneul have chosen a name, a call from the sea, of almost totemic quality. First, perhaps, it offers the suggestion of journeys over great distance, the distant hymns of fortune-tellers and gravitydefying acts of the oracles. Yet at the same time, comes the idea of earthly chaos, a willing reference to the telluric frenzy that darkens the sky yet also, paradoxically, brings promise of a radiant tomorrow.

Voilà 4 ou 5 ans que les Français Stéphane Pigneul et Frédéric D. Oberland ont entrepris un périple autour de la Méditerranée. En 2013, leur premier album avait été ramené de Grèce. Le suivant, d’Istanbul et de Sicile. Et ce troisième a en partie été imaginé au Liban, puis avec l’aide de Mondkopf ou encore G.W. Sok, ex… The Ex.
Point commun musical : l’immersion dans un mélange de free jazz, de post rock/punk, d’éléments de noise et de sonorités glanées au gré de ces pérégrinations.
Oiseaux-Tempête, c’est aussi un art du climat et du paysage parfois sombres, nés sur le fil de la dissonance. « Notes from the Mediterranean Sea » rappelle un orchestre symphonique s’accordant, mais qui n’en dessine pas moins une mélodie envoûtante. Sur « Baalshamin » s’affrontent souffle et électricité, en mode slow burner. Plus loin, c’est un texte du poète et activiste palestinien Mahmoud Darwich (« Red Indian’s penultimate speech to the white man ») qui s’insère dans un long crescendo de percus et de guitares.
