Description
Peter Kernel is a crapy pop band from Switzerland. Founded in 2005 by Aris (guitar), Barbara (bass) and Däwis (drums), the initial idea was to give a voice to moving images. Their rehearsal room enhances the desire to evade (musically speaking), a filthy and dank attic of a fry house. Highly influenced by experimental moviemaking of the bass player Barbara (videomaker as well), they begin to assemble tunes around the end of November 2005. These will become the soundtrack of the experimental movie LIKE A GIANT IN A TOWEL, interpreted by all three components. A twenty-minute, super8 short directed by Barbara, screened the following summer at the Locarno International Film Festival. In January 2006 they come back from Canada (Barbara's native country) with lots of new material, and print fifty homemade copies of the film & soundtrack, which soon sell out, that will be an input for new ideas. The outcome is a demo tagged HOME RECORDINGS, with home made tracks recorded between Winnipeg and Lugano. It’s printed in thirty copies. In April 2006 they start doing live gigs, that brings them to hit stages in Switzerland and Italy, where they get to know a duo called AMAVO, two girls from Venice. Together they put out a limited edition, of fifty copies, split cd entitled AMAVO EL TOCO. In April 2007 the identity of Peter Kernel is completed with the arrival of the second guitarist Anita. The relationship between the four components grows intimate. To the point of influencing new ideas, later recorded during long, hot days of August 2007 at Sauna Studio, in Varano Borghi (Italy). It’s their first real release entitled HOW TO PERFORM A FUNERAL. The disc comes out the first of March 2008. They shared the stage with Tying Tiffany (I), The Dagons (USA), Boris (JP), the Notwist (GER), Why? (USA), Cat Power (USA), Redworms farm (I), My way my love (JP), Amavo (I), September Malevolence (SWE), Enon (USA), Offlaga Disco Pax (I), Mogwai (SCO).

Peter Kernel est un trio art-punk suisse canadien composé de Aris Bassetti (guitare, voix, graphisme), Barbara Lehnhoff (guitare, voix, réalisatrice) et Ema Matis (batterie).
Le groupe existe depuis 2005, époque à laquelle ils composent la bande-son d’une comédie musicale sélectionnée au festival international du film de Locarno. En 2008, le groupe sort son premier album "How to Perform a Funeral". En 2010, ils participent à la tournée européenne de Wolf Parade en assurant leur première partie, qui les amène dans des salles de concert renommées comme le Hmv Forum à Londres, le Point Ephemère à Paris ou le Paléo Festival de Nyon en Suisse. Ils ont également accompagné Cat Power et Mogwai en tournée.
À l’écoute de "Anthem of the Hearts" qui ouvre l’album, on croit entendre Kim Gordon de Sonic Youth époque "Goo" à travers la voix monocorde de Barbara Lehnhoff. Un peu plus loin, la voix d’Aris Bassetti se rapproche du chanteur d’Arcade Fire. "The captain’s drunk" se développe progressivement, avec un chant à la fois classique et déviant, obsédant de par ses voix entremêlées. Le pas du tout pacifique "The Peaceful" est encore un titre empruntant aux motifs noisy de Sonic Youth. Le reste des chansons de l’album tissent un univers aussi sombre que ce chat noir qui orne la pochette. Sombre, certes, mais félin, avançant doucement, avec délicatesse pour se frayer un chemin dans nos oreilles.
Un disque qui ne paie pas de mine, mais qui vaut le détour pour tout amateur de noise rock.
