After signing Joy As A Toy who claim to play 'tennis pop' it was only natural for Cheap Satanism Records to include Vitas Guerulaïtis in their roster. The name of the band is obviously a nod to one of the most blazing players in the history of tennis. Vitas Gerulaitis was this inveterate party animal not always at the forefront of his opponents.

The band comprises three french activists who sought refuge in Brussels. One may wonder what brought the trio together as their drummer (David Costenaro) is an image editor who loves monoskiing and worships Jim Thompson, their keyboard player (Célia Jankowski) specialises in performance and studies the behaviour of flies, and their guitar player (Ismaël Colombani) is a mystical violin player who gives lectures once in a while.

Vitas Guerulaïtis is Cheap Satanism Records' first band to have no connection whatsoever with satanism or anti-church movements. In order to make up for this flaw, they promised to write a 6:66-long track. Their debut album is released in conjunction with French label Tandori (Drive with a Dead Girl, Maria Goretti Quartet). Vitas Guerulaïtis are tightrope walkers who prefer to work without a net. They will even do the splits and achieve a subtle balance between dadaist punk and psychedelic kraut rock which will turn your skull upside down. To counter-balance the tension provided by their music, they have chosen to explore the realm of the absurd and the poetry that lies within. One moment they will go for lame play on words (Chomeuse Go On), the next they will imagine that they are standing on a hill, being filmed in wide shot (Ben Hur). They will also question the Holy Virgin's right to early retirement (15 aout).

Vitas Guerulaitis est apparemment le premier groupe du label bruxellois Cheap Satanism à n'avoir aucun lien avec le satanisme. Pourtant, quelque part, on pourrait imaginer que le Diable (lui-même) écoute cet album à ses heures perdues, s'il lui en reste. Vitas Guerulaitis, qui emprunte son nom à un tennisman des années 70 mort à 40 ans, aime bien faire du bruit. Du bruit avec des guitares un peu crades, des synthés qui illustrent un film d'horreur pas encore tourné et des voix qui sonnent comme un Mike Patton arménien sous hélium. C'est évidemment étrange, et tout aussi intrigant. Panda géant associe voix féminines haut perchées au feedback d'un Thurston Moore s'il enregistrait dans un vrai garage, le tout entrecoupé de samples de vieux films français et d'un break de guitare aussi lituanienne que le manieur de raquette cité ci-dessus. Et comme c'est sans doute trop simple, on aura plus loin une sorte de muezzin, du post-punk et un passage que Tarantino devrait aller repêcher pour sa prochaine oeuvre. Tout ça en un morceau. Parfois, VG essaie (essaie) d'être un poil plus structuré, et ça donne le fantastique Tu t'énerves pas. Ailleurs, Chomeuz Go On (pardonnez-les) nous gratifie d'un synthé joliment post-quelque chose, alors que le tout se termine, forcément, dans un joyeux bordel sonore rappelant The Locust en moins bruyant mais plus marrant. Peut-être un peu répétitif, le premier album de Vitas Guerulaitis est une autre réussite de Cheap Satanism Records, alliant bruit, tension et un certain état d'esprit. Panda géant en faisant dix de trop, on attend, sur le second album, le morceau promis de 666 secondes.
