DESCRIPTION |
| | SOCRATES More Vultures, Hyenas and Coyotes Label : Modern City Records Year : 2006 Format : CD Style : Rock Availability : In stock
Price : 4.60 € - BUY
| | | | Description : | SoCRaTeS is a fairly interesting - even experimental - duo from France, which includes guitar and drums. It's impossible to guess why this band came to existence, but at least to me (someone making a first a acquaintance with the band) they struck me as a very sincere and relaxed outift. This seven-inch was released earlier this year and logically got its name from the songs on it (in order here) 'Coyotes', 'Vultures' and 'Hyenas'. Hence the title Vultures, hyenas and coyotes.
The band's music could be described with the phrase: 'Converge jams with Melt Banana during a two-minute elevator ride'. So there's the element of chaos, which shouldn't surprise anyone after that comparison, nor the weird jovial atmosphere that brings to mind the japanese band mentioned above. At times this great philosopher stumbles upon the magnificent and intimate world of surf-music. During these lapses one can spot some similarities to yet another japanese outfit, 5,6,7,8's. The latter two songs, which include the ever-so-cheering flirts with the surf-genre are the better songs on this release.
The seven-inch is a piece, which, whenever it finds its way to the turntable, gives the listener a nice mood and also brings to mind a surprisingly wide spectrum of assosiations to today's music - though mainly hardcore, rock or punk, but still... Well, maybe not a masterpiece, but definitely a solid three-song ep, which should please everyone who isn't afraid of the lo-fi sounds that often are typical to these kind of releases. In fact, in this case, since the band only consits of drums and guitar there isn't really that much noise coming out of the loudspeakers that the listener would have any difficulties in enjoying the music.
