With this third album, partly recorded in Hoboken by Pascal Deweze (ex-Metal Molly, producer of Bed Rugs and The Germans e.a.) and partly Brussels by Pierre Valfrey and Gilles Mortio, the Bruxellois make their virtuoso virtuoso playground much more melodic and accessible to all Curious ears.
Here is a kaleidoscopic disc which, if it still leaves some worries rushing on its pieces, transcends them to the charming way of the Day of the Dead Mexican and allows itself the most exalting contrasts. Bass and contagious ( 'Ghost Train'), teasing or aerial choruses ( 'Cowboy Mode', ' 'Madhouse' or 'Hipsters of the Apocalypse' with Françoise Vidick) are an integral part of this dream journey into the heart of the imaginary tropics. Na twee albums op Cheap Satanism (‘Valparaiso’, 2010, en ‘Dead As A Dodo’, 2012), een al net zo Brussels label als Humpty Dumpty, is het tijd voor verandering. Van label dan toch, want de band bestaat nog steeds uit Clément Nourry (gitaar, vervelende stem), Gilles Mortio (bas, keyboards, zang), JP De Ghest (drums, zang) en nieuweling Alice Perret (keyboards, viola, zang). Die toevoeging vervelend zou vervelend zijn als we het bij iedereen zouden hebben gezet, maar we vinden het eigenlijk wel. Pascal Deweze, van velerlei bands waaronder Metal Molly en Sukilove, speelt bas op ‘Ghost Train’ en nam deels de plaat op in zijn studio in Hoboken. De andere helft deed Joy As A Toy gewoon zelf. De eerste keer dat ‘Mourning Mountains’ op stond, konden we het schijfje na drie nummers gewoon afzetten. We vonden opener ‘Action Love’ nog ok, zeker wat de muziek betreft. De kleinste begon echter al te morren. We zaten aan tafel voor het avondeten. Steevast wordt er dan muziek gedraaid (geen radio want daar kan niemand hier ten huize tegen) om elkaars eetgeluiden naar de achtergrond te duwen. Na drie nummers weigerde de kleinste verder te eten. Met dit soort muziek kan hij niet eten, zei hij. De cd moest af. Hij wilde het hoesje zien, om te onthouden dat hij het ding nooit meer zou hoeven te beluisteren. Heeft hij een punt? Hij heeft al zijn punten. De muziek valt meestal nog mee, al zijn we nooit onder de indruk. Het zijn de stemmen die ons met afschuw vervullen. En doordat er een veelheid aan stemmen opduikt, en die ook nog nauwelijks hun mond dicht houden, werkt ‘Mourning Mountain’ ook ons behoorlijk op de zenuwen. Ook als er geen kinderen in de buurt zijn en we de plaat, plichtbewust, opnieuw draaien.

Longtemps perçus comme de tendres hurluberlus, les musiciens de Joy as a Toy se détachent des films d'horreur, du "vampire rock" et de tout ce qui fait un peu peur (des improvisations free-jazz aux démonstrations prog-rock) pour se concentrer sur l'enregistrement d'un disque fascinant. Mourning Mountains est un sommet ensoleillé, un pic à escalader sans corde ni mousqueton. Juste pour le sport, l'ivresse, la satisfaction d'apercevoir de nouveaux horizons et d'écouter de belles chansons : des harmonies vertigineuses et quelques mélodies à siffler en altitude. Histoire de prendre de la hauteur.
